Aukera Romania – Strengthening Belgian-Romanian Energy Partnerships
Aukera Group was established in 2021 with the ambition of building a fully integrated, pan-European renewable energy platform. From the outset, the company positioned itself as both a developer and an Independent Power Producer (IPP), active across solar PV, onshore wind and battery energy storage systems (BESS).
Headquartered in Brussels, Aukera has rapidly grown into a diversified energy platform operating across five core European markets: the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Belgium and Romania. The company benefits from a strong shareholder base combining entrepreneurial capital and long-term institutional vision. Its key shareholders include AtlasInvest, a global energy transition investor founded by Marcel van Poecke; Reggeborgh, one of Europe’s leading family-owned investment firms; and SFPIM, the Belgian Sovereign Wealth Fund.
The entry of SFPIM further reinforced Aukera’s Belgian roots and underlined the company’s long-term commitment to sustainable economic growth and the European energy transition.
Aukera Romania – A Strategic Expansion in 2021
Romania became part of Aukera’s European growth strategy in 2021, when the company opened its Bucharest office in the second quarter of that year. The decision reflected Romania’s strong renewable energy potential and the increasing alignment of its regulatory framework with European decarbonisation objectives.
Aukera Romania S.R.L., formally established in September 2021, has since developed into a key country platform within the group. The Romanian market offers significant wind resources, growing solar opportunities and, importantly, an increasing need for energy storage solutions to enhance system stability.
From the outset, Aukera assembled a highly experienced local leadership team, bringing expertise from international renewable developers, major utilities, grid operators and financial institutions. This combination of technical, financial and regulatory know-how has been instrumental in navigating Romania’s evolving energy framework and competitive support mechanisms.
Wind and Storage Development
Since entering the Romanian market, Aukera has built a substantial local development platform, with a pipeline of approximately 6.9 GW across wind and battery storage projects at various stages of development. The company secured wind capacity in Romania’s first CfD auctions in 2024 and 2025, demonstrating its ability to deliver competitive and bankable projects under the country’s new support scheme.
In parallel, Aukera is advancing large-scale energy storage as a strategic priority. Its flagship 250MW Gura Ialomitei Battery Energy Storage System project, supported by a €10 million PNRR grant, is designed to become one of the largest storage facilities in Romania once operational.
By combining wind development secured through CfD mechanisms with system-critical storage infrastructure, Aukera Romania is building an integrated platform that supports both renewable expansion and grid resilience.
