The directive (formally adopted by the European Union) aims to close the gender pay gap through transparency and accountability.

Key requirements:

  • Pay transparency for candidates
    • Salary range must be disclosed in job postings or before interviews
  • Employee rights
    • Workers can request pay levels and averages by gender for similar roles
  • Reporting obligations (for companies with 100+ employees)
    • Gender pay gap reporting (frequency depends on company size)
  • Joint pay assessment
    • Required if gender pay gap ≥ 5% and unjustified
  • Ban on pay secrecy clauses
